I was stunned at how much the Festival Express footage of "New Speedway Boogie" reminded me of what the Grateful Dead were like when I first saw them in 1970.

Pigpen was among the truly fine citizens of a scene noted for beautiful people.
Artists performing then that were especially personable to their audiences include Janis Joplin, Papa John Creach, John Cipollina, Mama Cass, Ron McKernan, Carol Burnett and Cesar Romero.

Pigpen will long be remembered even by people who barely remember him, such as Justin Kreutzmann -
